Dear Friends (especially the one who forwarded this to all and sundry),

If you receive an email message that uses any of these words or phrases;
Urgent!
Warning!
Forward to Everyone You Know!
Virus!
etc., investigate before forwarding it.  999 out of 1000 of such messages are hoaxes and urban legends.  Many have been floating around for years and have been refuted repeatedly by those whom they purportedly quote or refer to.  Very, very, very rarely, a message of this type is authentic.  Continuing to send these out into cyberspace uses up a phenomenal amount of bandwidth, that could be more profitably used for uplifting invitations to visit porn sites and the like.

Here are some websites where you can check out the veracity of panic messages before you forward them.  Save this message so that you can refer to it when you get another email of this type (and you will):

There's a ton of fraud out on the internet.  Here are some sites to use:

    Email petitions and chain letters fall into the same category. If it says to send it to a certain address after 500 names, check out the website after the @ sign to see if this company/agency has anything to do with what you are signing. I know of one UN agency getting so many petitions, that have a notice on their home page saying that they have nothing to do with the peace petition circulating in their name. If you're going to sign or circulate a petition, do it to a real one.
    For your own protection, folks, you really ought to check out the stories behind any petitions, chain letters, special appeals or special offers.

And thank you for being a good Internet citizen!
